Orcadian Winter

In Orkney, the winters are long and very dark.  It's only light about 9am and dark again by 3pm.  It's such a contrast to the summer where it is light at 3am and dark at 11pm!

However, it never really gets very cold here because we are such a small island and are surrounded by sea but when I finally got up this afternoon, we'd had our first snow of the year.

Just now it is 0.3 degrees C so still no negative numbers but with the wind we usually have, it's quite cold enough!

I spend most of my evenings these days in front of a very welcome fire.

Cosy fire

Someone else likes the fire too....

  1. It feels like there has been about 3 or 4 hours of proper daylight today with twilight beginning about 1.30pm.
I wonder if you are on the water right now,or maybe imbibing at a waterside inn?
